Fish and Your Health

Fish is essentially low in fat, and lean white fish is lower in fat than any other source of animal protein.  In particular, cod, haddock, flat fish and many shell fish contain less than 1% fat, of which only 10% of that is saturated fat.  Approximately 25% of chicken fat is saturated fat.  And most fish and shell fish are low in cholesterol.

Fish is also extremely health-promoting.   There are strong indications that Omega-3 (the fatty acids found in oily fish) can;

  • lower blood levels of the 'bad' low-density lipoproteins (LDL);

  • it can reduce hypertension and blood pressure;

  • Omega-3 raises levels of the 'good' high-density lipoproteins (HDL);

  • There is also some evidence that Omega-3 increases the efficacy of antipain medication given to sufferers of rheumatoid athritis.
